After doubts of even having a season amid the pandemic this year, the MFFL 2020 season has officially crossed the midway point of the regular season. As surprising as that may be, what is even more unnerving is that the MFFL playoff push has officially commenced, with many teams already on the brink and in dire need of wins now to stay on pace with the leaders. Unsurprisingly, however, is GM Dominic's absolutely abysmal season thus far. The 2020 season for Covid's Warriors started out terribly after a downright dreadful team name created by their manager, and rightfully so, has only gotten worse from there. Sitting at a record of 0-7, GM Dominic and the Warriors have been all but officially eliminated from playoff contention as the last remaining winless team in the league. As this is a completely serious and competitive league and Weekly Wrap-up report, GM Dominic and his team will not be included in any official MFFL reports until they finally manage a victory or their time to shine in the Dansky Bowl arrives. We frankly have no time for managers who don't have time to manage their teams properly and certainly, no time for laughing stock teams. GM August and his Nihilists can stay for now since we still need to joke about something.
Regarding the teams that do actually matter though, the race for the playoffs has been electric so far, with plenty of teams getting off to red hot starts to the season. An 8 team pack has burst ahead of the remaining 4, lead by the recently defeated DTDB Irish Assassins (6-1). With only 2 games separating the top of the standings and the 8th place Romanian RAPOs (4-3), the second half of the season is sure to feature plenty of matchups with massive playoff implications with the top 8 teams facing off against each other in 16 more games in our final 6 weeks. Nearly every remaining matchup is a must win matchup for every (serious) team in the league going forward, especially for the stragglers who now find themselves 2 games behind a playoff position. The Power Rankings are a great way to look at each team's outlook, irrespective of record, and get a glimpse into how the teams in the hunt look to be shaping up as the playoff race continues.
Power Rankings:
- Belichick Yo Self
- Mr. Nice Guy
- Scoregasms
- DTDB Irish Assassins
- Action Jackson
- Fantasy Football Team
- Top 2 Not 2
- Tittsburgh Feelers
- Romanian RAPOs
- Bigpapihugetime
- Don't Even Schmatter
Notable Movements:
- After a hideous performance that was blatantly disrespectful to the Wildcat Matchup of the Week title, GM Connor has dropped significantly down from his 6 week stint in the top 2, while GM David has replaced GM Grafton at the top of the rankings for the time being. With a slew of top RBs led by star QB Murray, the Yo Selfs have certainly established themselves as the team to beat in the league going forward.
- On the back of WR Tyler Rockett, the Jackies exploded with a 150 point performance that saw them soar up the rankings. Threats to both RBs Zeke and Rojo's performances are balanced with the promise of fellow RB Edmonds in a takeover opportunity leaving GM Kelly and the Jackies in a strong mid table ranking with the momentum to keep on climbing.
- Despite strong near 120 point performances, both GM Ian and GM Michael actually find themselves a spot lower on the rankings than last week's list. This is just a further testament to the fierce competition that encompasses the top teams in the league. Despite their (2-5) record, GM Matt and the Feelers have showed excellent potential that could give them an outside chance at climbing back into the playoff race as they climb up to the 8th spot on the power rankings.
Matchup Highlights:
- Scoregasms (4-3) survive shootout, outlast Tittsburgh Feelers (2-5) in 142-122 firework show.
GM Brody and the Scoregasms were at their peak performance last week in a matchup that featured the 2nd highest combined score this season. QB Wilson continued his incredible campaign with a 37 point performance, while the return of WR Adams electrified the Gasms offense as he also had a 30 point game (36) on an outstanding 13 catch day for nearly 200 yards and 2 scores. While GM Matt and the Feelers attempted to claw their way back into the fight on the backs of QB Rodgers and RB Gurley who combined for 57 points, the opportunity left open by GM Brody's 4 point combined RB performance was swiftly slammed shut as the Kansas City defense was instrumental in the victory with 26 points. A disappointing debut from newly acquired TE Kelce tainted the excitement of the win for the Scoregasms, but facing a laughable Jets defense this upcoming week, GM Brody is confident in the quick rebound as his team continues their tear on the league. GM Matt will go back to the drawing board once again, hoping for a rebound from star WR Metcalf who was an odd let down in the defeat this week. They'll have a bye week in week 8 to reassess themselves before an exciting week 9 matchup against the Jackies.
- DTDB Irish Assassins (6-1) and Mr. Nice Guy (5-2) put a disgrace on the league, absolutely ruin MFFL WMOTW.
In what promised to be a star-studded and stupefying matchup between both #1 and #2 on the Season Standings and the power rankings, GM Connor and GM Grafton delivered a snoozefest of disappointment. Both teams put up their worst performances of the season in one of the lowest scoring matchups of the year. GM Grafton and the Nice Guys escaped with the 81-66 victory, however, the league is investigating claims that the victory should simply not count and that the game should be officially removed from the league season after the utter disgrace that was put on display. If MFFL had any broadcasting deals, this primetime game would have been blacked out to save the fans around the league from wasting their time. Simply staring at a black screen would have been less dreadful than what was shown this past weekend. If we wanted to watch poor management and bad fantasy football, we would just have a live feed to the Don't Even Schmatter Front Offices.
Weekly Awards:
- Oh Boy! Play of the Week:
The best way to respond after getting awarded the Murphy Mixup is to turn around and make a great play the next week. GM Kelly did exactly that this weekend with his start of WR Kirk. After benching the WR the week prior and getting burned for it, Kelly did not make the same mistake twice, giving his WR the start, where Kirk delivered with 2 TDs, helping to secure the victory over GM Darren and the Team.
GM Connor piled on his pitiful performance this past weekend by giving the WR start to Gallup, who goosed him. Going catchless on 2 targets, Gallup was vastly outperformed by WR Aiyuk, who was left on the bench. Aiyuks 14 points would have been exactly enough for the victory, but instead GM Connor's poor decision making results in the first loss of the season for the Assassins.
GM Kelly was able to scoop up blast from the past WR Antonio Brown for free on Free Agency this week after all the waivers had gone through. Still serving the final game of his suspension, AB will be working out with his new teammates in Tampa, potentially giving the Jackies an extra WR weapon for the playoff push. Although the results remain to be seen to determine if the transaction was worth it, a $0 investment is certainly one worth taking.
GM Matt claimed to have butt-dropped Jets RB Perine. The transaction left the Feelers with no healthy RB left on the roster to fill his spot, amassing panic around Feelers HQ before our super awesome Commissioner stepped in to save the day.
- Defensive Coordinator of the Week:
GM Brody constructed a Cover 2 defense to combat the high flying receivers of GM Matt's Tittsburgh Feelers. Able to lock down GM Matt's great hands team, the Feelers WRs were left grasping air as passes were routinely swatted away by the designated corner man coverage with extra safety help over the top. a 6.5 point deduction was the result of the defensive scheme usage, helping GM Brody to secure the victory.
Wildcat Matchup of the Week:
After last week's humiliating matchup, newly crowned power ranking leaders, GM David and Belichick Yo Self (5-2) will face off against the hot Action Jackson (4-3) squad led by GM Kelly. The Jackies are certainly ready to put on a show and are set up with a great stage against the ground and pound guru that is GM David. Expect this matchup to mirror exactly nothing from last weeks Wildcat matchup and instead feature a high scoring affair that starts with the 3 starting RBs on the Yo Selfs: Henry, Hunt, and Henderson. The 3 H's have faced stacked box defenses all season but have barreled through nearly every wall that has been put in their place, leaving the Jackies offense with a giant task to uphold. GM Kelly will certainly have his hands full with question marks surrounding all 3 of his RBs leaving him to rely once more on the jet fueled WR Rockett. Action Jackson himself is back off his bye week, but faces a tough Pittsburgh defense. With QB Murray missing on the Yo Selfs as he rests on his bye week, the opportunity is open for QB Jackson to steal the show should he be able to overcome the stingy defense and deliver the goods to Hollywood.
As we head into week 8 and teams really start to shape up, let's take one more quick moment to recognize just how AWFUL of a trade that was. Okay, that's all for us here at MFFL Studios, consider week 7 officially wrapped up. Best of luck to everyone in their upcoming matchups this weekend! Yes, even you .
